Shopping in Reading: independents, specialists and neighbourhood stops

Explore Reading's independent shops alongside its main shopping centres, from Harris Arcade and Cross Street to Caversham and the neighbourhoods.

Give the smaller streets some time

Broad Street and the main shopping centres are familiar Reading destinations, but leave time for the streets around them. Harris Arcade, off Friar Street, is an Art Deco arcade with independent retailers. A shorter shopping trip can still include somewhere you have not tried before.

Visit Reading's shopping pages bring together the Oracle, Broad Street Mall and Harris Arcade. Use them to get your bearings, then check the individual business when a particular product or service is the reason for your visit.

Seek out a shop with a particular skill

Jacobs the Jewellers on King Street offers jewellery alongside services such as repairs and valuations. On Cross Street, 7 Flowers & Tea combines a florist with a tea room. Beadle Crome Interiors on Oxford Road is another specialist stop, with furniture and home furnishings.

These are different kinds of purchase, but the useful preparation is similar: bring the dimensions, a model number or a photograph when it will help explain what you need. Ask about stock, lead times and collection or delivery before planning around a particular item.

Make a neighbourhood trip of it

Caversham has its own shopping streets and independent businesses. AW Cycles on Henley Road is a destination for bikes, accessories and workshop enquiries. Combine a specialist errand with a local café stop rather than assuming every journey has to run through the town centre.

Tilehurst, Oxford Road, Woodley and Earley also have everyday services worth keeping in mind. Search by area when you need something nearby, especially for purchases or repairs you may return to collect.

Plan for the journey home

A bag of gifts and a furniture purchase need different plans. Confirm a shop's access and collection arrangements and choose transport that suits what you are carrying. For a single essential stop, a quick stock enquiry can save another trip.
